Objectives:
• Students will explain how Jim Crow laws circumvented the intent and meaning of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments.
• Students will analyze and/or explain the various components of Jim Crow legislation and their effects on Southern minorities.
Bell ringer: Read V6.27 “The Second Inaugural”
Agenda:
1. Lesson Opening: Introduce students to the topic of Jim Crow by playing the song “Black, Brown and White” by Big Bill Broonzy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0c1c0ZsTLA). Project the lyrics (Attachment A) so that students can read along as they listen. Questions to begin a discussion about Jim Crow: • What concerns did the singer have? • How was the singer treated by society? • Based on the lyrics, what do you think the term “Jim Crow” means?
2. Activity: Work in small groups of 2-3 to explore the image gallery of the Jim Crow Museum web site: https://ferris.edu/HTMLS/news/jimcrow/what2.htm. If student devices are not available, you may pass out hard copies of some of the images for students to examine (Attachment B). Share with the class which image(s) stood out most to you and why. Discuss students’ reactions as a class.
3. Read “The South Restricts African American Rights,” in Pearson United States History (pp. 84-86) and complete the graphic organizer (Attachment C)
4. Lesson Closure: Using the C-E-R Model, have students answer the sample questions (Attachment D).
