Lesson on Monday, October 9, 2017

Aim: How did the arrival of new settlers affect the Plains Indians? 
Bell Ringer: Discuss Journal 16 (from Friday) 
Objectives: 
  1. Students will review and discuss the Native American experience.  
Agenda: 
  1. Bell Ringer (5 min) 
  1. Review HW (EOC Page 4) (5 min) 
  1. . Lesson Opening: Introduce students to the topic of the expansion into the West and the experiences of farmers who settled there. Share image of settlers in sod houses (Attachment A) and engage discussion on what life may have been like for these individuals.  
  1. Journal 17 – How did mineral discoveries shape the settlement of the West? (chapter 2, section 1) 
  1. Have students complete the note-taking guide (Attachment B) using their textbook (McGraw Hill's United States History pp. 71-86), online resources, or class notes as appropriate. Teachers may want to guide students when completing the notes, have students work in small groups, or independently. 
  1. Exit Ticket: Describe Push and Pull factors of Settlement of the West.
